I’m Joe Dominguez
A curious kid, really, I’ve spent a lifetime investigating the world around me.
As I think back, there was one event that changed me forever: I was about four years old and my uncle had just returned home from Vietnam and was sitting on our couch in the living room talking with my parents. He was drawing and I took notice. I sat at his feet the entire time and watched him draw with a black pen on white paper. I literally saw it take shape right in front of my eyes. I was changed. I have that drawing hanging in my studio today.
As an artist, I used to draw waves and surf brand designs on my book covers in school and I learned graphic arts in shop class in high school. As a photographer, some of my best photos were captured on film, and some of my best drawings have been done on napkins. The first book I really read was Tortilla Flat and these days I’m usually reading two books - one in the morning and one in the evening. I’m Gen-X to the core – I am fluent with analog and digital tools. Every medium interests me and I will always start with pen and paper.
I battle my own ghosts everyday just like you do. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but I always show up. I’ve carried a sketchbook since I was fourteen and my life has been documented. If nothing else, those thoughts over time are proof that people change, and skills get better. There is so much more to me than what you see here.
My sketchbook holds my writing and has recorded my incessant study of the arts, while my obsession with photography has journeyed with me around the world. Today, they merge into a powerful and fluent mix of image-making goodness.
Many individuals have contributed to my success and I am humbled to have crossed paths with all of them. I’m on an unreal journey and I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the greatest brands in the world. Those names include Apple, Google, Dwell Magazine, Dreamworks SKG, National Geographic, Restoration Hardware, Square, Sephora, Universal Pictures and Warner Brothers. But that was yesterday. Today is what matters.
I’m pretty easy-going. Give me a chirp if you want to chat about a project.
